It had been quite a while since we’d seen the Phillies play so poorly at home, but wouldn’t you know it, it happened with Cole Hamels on the mound. In the 1-0 loss last night, Hamels was ridiculously good, yet still sits on seven wins. The Phils 12 game home winning streak is history, so they’ll have to start it again today against a pitcher they haven’t fared well against.
R.A. Dickey shut the door on the Phillies back in May as he blanked them through seven innings in an 8-0 Mets win. The Phillies are swinging the bats differently this time around, although you wouldn’t know it by last night’s performance. Dickey is a knuckleballer, which the Phils have struggled with this year (see: Wakefield, Tim). But if they are patient, they can get to Dickey, who has redefined himself this season in the majors. We’ll see who wins out this time around.
Luckily, they have Roy Halladay to keep this one close enough, should the bats lay down once again. Doc faced the Mets once this year and it was pretty. A complete game shutout, one of his three this season, came on May 1 against the Mets. A repeat performance is welcome, as is a series victory.
Currently, the Braves have a two game advantage in the East, while the Giants hold a 1.5 game advantage in the Wild Card standings.
