Not really much to say about a loss like this. Johan Santana and Cole Hamels pitched incredibly tonight. It really had a playoff atmosphere feel to it. Unfortunately for the Phillies, it was Hamels who made that ‘one’ mistake in a tight ball game. It turned out to be the deciding factor lifting the Mets to a 1-0 victory.
That mistake came in the form of a Jeff Francoeur home run in the top of the seventh inning. Aside from the solo shot, Hamels was nearly unhittable going seven innings allowing only the one run on six hits and striking out 11.
Santana, meanwhile, was having his own kind of something special for the first five innings. The Phillies hitters were unable to get on base via the hit until a Placido Polanco single with two outs in the sixth. Santana went 7 1/3 innings, gave up five hits and walked three batters.
The Phillies did threaten in the eighth inning loading the bases with two outs but pinch hitter Ross Gload grounded out to second to end the inning. Francisco Rodriguez was called on in the eighth to get the five out save. Which he did.
This is the 13th time Hamels has pitched into the seventh inning or later this year. The Phillies have won only seven of those games.
Raul Ibanez extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the eighth inning. This loss ended the current Phillies winning streak and their streak of 12 straight wins at home. The last time the Phillies had lost at home was July 7th against the Braves.
