Joe Blanton will look to recover from back-to-back beat-downs tonight against the Brewers. They’re a vulnerable bunch, having been swept by the Washington Nationals over the weekend. But that doesn’t mean anything, as Charlie Manuel says that’s when teams are most dangerous – when they’re desperate for a win.
Blanton’s ERA is a wicked 10.45, and his damage has been concentrated to half of his innings. In 5 1/3 of his 10 1/3 innings, he’s given up all 12 runs. Blanton has talked numerous times about keeping the ball down in the zone. He’d better do that tonight against the powerful Brewers lineup consisting of Braun, Fielder, Weeks, McGehee, and more.
Utley and Oswalt updates after the jump
Shaun Marcum is a pitcher to keep an eye on. Last year in Toronto, Marcum went 13-9 with an ERA in the mid-three’s. He has the tools to make a giant step forward this year. While he has yet to break out completely, the writing is on the wall for him to do so in Milwaukee. Hits could be at a premium tonight for the Phillies against this tough righty.
UTLEY NEWS
Chase Utley ran the bases again today, he looks fine to the naked eye, but we all know the deal with him. Utley is progressing slowly and the updates from the team are even slower.
OSWALT NEWS
Roy Oswalt threw a bullpen session today and is fine for Thursday out in San Diego. Rich Dubee said he looks like he could pitch today, if necessary.
Lineup: Victorino CF, Planco 3B, Rollins SS, Howard 1B, Ibanez LF, Gload RF, Ruiz C, Valdez 2B, Blanton P
