It couldn’t go any worse for Joe Blanton tonight, right? Let’s hope not. Dubbed the mere mortal of the group, Blanton (0-0, 0.00) will look to cool off the Mets’ bats who had 13 hits last night against starter Cole Hamels. The bright side for Hamels, if there was one, was that 12 of those hits were singles.
The Phillies know all about playing small ball. They lead the National League with 34 singles this season. Ryan Howard and Shane Victorino will look to continue their success off Mets starter Mike Pelfrey (0-1, 10.38). They each have 11 hits off the righty in their careers including a home run.
Blanton, the Phillies number five starter, has had some success against the Mets in his career. He is 3-1 with a 2.64 ERA in 47.2 innings. The Phillies as a team as hitting .317 with 22 runs scored this season.
Pete Orr will get the start at second base giving Wilson Valdez the day off. I know, it still sounds weird to me too. Also, Chooch has the night off so Brian Schneider will be behind the plate.
Worth noting: Blanton is 3-0 with a 1.27 ERA in four home starts against the Mets.

Your Gameday Beer – Fire Island’s Red Wagon IPA
Tonight’s selection comes to us from Fire Island, NY, that crazy place off Long Island where cars are prohibited. And it is this quirky phenomenon that give us the name of the beer since red wagons are what locals use to transport goods around the island. Ah, simple times call for a simple beer. This golden beer is balanced with floral and fruity hops and is perfect for a September evening. Have it with some grilled pork chops.
GO PHILLIES!
