One strike: that’s all Huston Street needed to finish off a victory for the Colorado Rockies. One pitch: that’s all John Mayberry Jr. needed to change the flow of the game.
An incredible 4-3 come-from-behind win lands fifteenth on our top moments list, and it was quite a thriller. The Rockies led by two with two outs in the ninth inning. With the count full, the Rockies were one strike away from the win, but Street left a pitch up in the zone that Mayberry did not miss.
Mayberry was called upon to pinch hit and with one swing of the bat he evened the score at three with a deep two-run home run. The momentum immediately shifted to the Phillies side.
The Phillies eventually took the lead in the tenth inning on Shane Victorino’s solo home run. However, if it wasn’t for Mayberry, Victorino would have never had the opportunity to win the game.
The victory on August 1st was one of several ninth inning comebacks for the Phillies. It was the perfect example of why fans shouldn’t lose hope when a team falls behind. Mayberry’s blast proved that no game is ever over until the final out is recorded.
