“He has flat-out looked me in the eye and told me he’s glad he didn’t get drafted by his hometown San Diego Padres because he loves pitching on the east coast.”
That was from Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com who joined Mike Gill on the Sports Bash on 97.3 ESPN FM Monday afternoon. In that interview, Salisbury talks about Cole Hamels sticking around long-term. He believes the Phillies have the money to do it and have budgeted for it. But it could come down to a bidding war in free agency, where it is likely headed.
The problem is, does Cole love other parts of the eastern seaboard the way he loves Philly? Because the Yankees and Red Sox will be waiting with open arms and piles of cash if they so choose. However, Salisbury says the Phillies have plenty of money to throw around, too, just as team president David Montgomery said days ago.
