The kid can’t catch a break. Dom Brown injured his right thumb sliding for a ball and will now undergo an MRI to see if there is any damage, according to the beat writers from Clearwater. Brown told David Hale of the Wilmington News Journal that they are “playing it safe.”
Regardless, he can ill afford to miss precious time in the field and at the plate. Brown has gone 2-for-8 to begin Spring Training with a couple of defensive blunders tossed in. If he’s to miss any extended time due to the injured thumb, he can pretty much book his ticket to Lehigh Valley.
Of course, 2-for-8 tells us nothing. However, he worked hard on his defense in the offseason and is having a little bit of trouble early on. He injured his thumb by overcompensating for a bad read on a ball. Brown went into a slide and sprained the thumb.
Let’s hope for good news for a kid who has been snakebitten in Spring Training as recent as last year. If you’ll recall, Brown broke the hamate bone, causing him to miss several weeks. Brown was also hit on the hand with a pitch early this spring.
Hale says there could be an update coming from Scott Proefrock sometime today.
