On the other side, the Phillies pitchers did quite well. Cliff Lee went six innings, giving up just one run on five hits. He also struck out seven. Chad Qualls pitched a perfect seventh inning, and Jose Contreras gave up a run in the eighth after a fielding error allowed a baserunner.
On the Juan Pierre vs. Scott Podsednik front, Pierre went 0-3, got caught stealing, and left five men on base. Podsednik was 0-1 with a strikeout and made a fielding error when he dropped a fly ball in the eight inning.
I’m not one to live and die by Spring Training results, but it’s never a good sight when the Phils struggle offensively, especially with the way last season ended. I’d like to see them put together a few good games offensively before the season starts to show us that they are ready and prepared to pick up the slack without Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.
The club will take on a Yankees split squad tomorrow at Bright House Field at 1:05 PM.
