The Phillies are in Baltimore tonight, as they take on the Orioles in the first of a nine-game, all interleague road trip. The last time they beat the Orioles was back in 2006 in a game that Ryan Madson started. They are 116-137 all-time in interleague play, and 20-16 over the last three years.
Tonight, Joe Blanton, a guy who spent five seasons in the American League pitching for the Athletics, will get the start tonight. He’s on a cold streak (10.98 ERA in his last four starts), but he actually pitched OK in his last start against the Marlins, even if the stats don’t say that.
He’s 1-2 with a 5.09 ERA against the Orioles in his career, with two of those starts in Camden Yards where he has a 6.00 ERA.
Opposing him will be Jake Arrieta, a young righty with just 289.2 Major League innings. He’s never faced the Phillies, but both Juan Pierre and Jim Thome have six plate appearances against him. Pierre is 2-6 with an RBI and Thome is 1-3 with three walks against him.
Arrieta has an ERA that is actually higher than Blanton’s this year, which means he is not pitching well at all. Expect tonight’s game to be a slugfest, especially with the DH.
Lineup: Rollins SS, Pierre LF, Pence RF, Thome DH, Victorino CF, Ruiz C, Wigginton 3B, Mayberry 1B, Fontenot 2B
Your Gameday Beer: Tonight’s featured brew is Rogue Northwestern Ale, an India Red Ale from Oregon. With all the rain the Delaware Valley has been experiencing, it’s starting to feel like we live up there. This beer was recommended by one of our loyal readers, Chris, who considers it an A+ beer. Have it with some fresh fish or other local seafood.
