Bullpen’s Scoreless Streak Ends; Loses Lead

The Phillies came off a fantastic sweep of the Washington Nationals, but couldn’t keep their winning streak together as they were defeated by the New York Mets, 9-5.

GRAND SLAM GIVES PHILS EARLY LEAD

– The Phillies quickly answered after the Mets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on David Wright’s RBI single.  Chris Young walked Jimmy Rollins, plunked Kevin Frandsen, and walked Chase Utley, loading the bases to lead off the inning.  Ryan Howard drilled a home run to deep right-center field.  The grand slam gave the Phillies a 4-1 lead.

PITCHING NOT ITS BEST

-Vance Worley continues to be inconsistent.  His line: 4.1 innings, 9 hits, 4 earned runs, and 4 strikeouts.

-In the fourth inning, Worley surrendered a two-run home run to Mike Baxter.  The Mets were within one, but soon tied it at four.  The Phillies re-took the lead on Chase Utley’s ninth home run of the season.  The lead wouldn’t last long.

-The Phillies’ bullpen ended their scoreless inning streak at 15.2 innings.  Antonio Bastardo gave up a RBI double to Kelly Shoppach.  The Mets tied the game at 5, and it wouldn’t be the last time Shoppach hurt the Phils.

-In the tenth inning, BJ Rosenberg gave up a RBI double to Ike Davis.  The Mets took the lead, and kept adding on.  The big blow came on Shoppach’s two-run home run.  The Mets went up 9-5, and the Phillies couldn’t muster much offense in the bottom half of the inning.

GAME NOTES

-Jonathan Papelbon and Raul Valdes did their job.  Valdes pitched 1.2 scoreless innings.  Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth.

-Domonic Brown was pulled after he irritated his knee.
