The Phillies will try to split the series with the Reds. The Phillies have been so close in the last two games, but just didn’t have enough for the victory. They haven’t been getting blown out by the first-place Reds, so it’s a good sign that the Phillies are battling.
Tonight could be a possible Cy Young candidate matchup. Both Cole Hamels and Johnny Cueto are having excellent years. Cueto currently leads the National League in earned run average, and is tied for first in wins. Hamels is 4-2 with a 2.36 ERA since the All Star Break. If Hamels keeps it up, he could make a push for Cy Young considerations.
Hamels must love facing the Reds, but the Reds probably do not like facing him. Against Cincinnati throughout his career, Hamels is 7-0 with a 1.44 ERA. He has a 0.88 WHIP in 62.2 innings against the Reds. Reds hitters collectively have a .164 average against him.
