Phillies Unravel Late, Miss Out on Sweep of Marlins
Roy Halladay gave ’em a chance, but the Phillies offense couldn’t get it together once again. The Phillies had an opportunity to sweep the reeling Marlins, but instead were blown out, losing 9-2.
THE PEN IS BULL
-It’s like playing Russian Roulette. Charlie Manuel has no choice but to call on someone; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t Today in Miami, it did not, as the bullpen allowed six runs in the eighth inning. The culprits: BJ Rosenberg, Raul Vales, and Michael Schwimer.
-Schwimer had been on a tear, but in his last few outings has really hit the skids. In his last two outings, Schwimer has allowed five earned in 1 2/3 innings. Prior to that, he’d only given up one run in his last 11 outings.
DOC WAS NICE
-Halladay gave it his all, going seven strong, but laboring toward the end. He allowed three earned and struck out seven innings. His last four starts have all been solid after hitting a rough patch following the DL stint. Not much more he could do here today.
THE OFFENSE WAS NOT
–Ty Wigginton (of all people) accounted for the only two runs the Phillies would score. He had two hits, including a home run, and was the only Phillie to collect multiple hits. The 0-fer’s were Utley, Luna, Brown, and Kratz.
WELCOME TO MIAMI
-Or not. Nobody shows up to games, as you can see in the picture above. The announced attendance was over 22,000, but it looked like a little league game. Build it, and people still won’t go in South Florida.
