Why I Love the Phillies – Barry

I guess my story is different to most Phillies fans. As a soccer and cricket loving Englishman, I’d never seen a baseball game until I stumbled across the Phillies when I was in Philadelphia for a convention in 1992. Though the Phillies finished last in the NL East in ’92 they won all three games I saw at the Vet and the whole experience left me wanting more. My wife and I returned in ’93 and the rest is history. As a rookie baseball fan you couldn’t help but be reeled in by that ’93 team and they still remain my favourite Phillies team to this day. A great bunch of characters.

Since then we’ve been back over to the States every year (our record stands at 4 visits one year including spring training) and we’ve also seen the Phillies on the road in quite a few cities, which is a great way to see lots of your marvellous country. We brought our grandkids over from England for a visit last year and took them to see a couple of Phillies games and they loved it. We were privileged to be at CBP when the Phils clinched the NL East in 2007 and the last 5 years have been a blast, with winning the WS the obvious highlight.

The inconsistency this season has been really frustrating but injuries to key players hasn’t helped. Hopefully 2012 will just be a blip and we’ll get back to winning ways next year. We’ll be in Philly next week for the start of the 6 game homestand against the Rockies and Marlins and as soon as the 2013 schedule is released we’ll be planning our next trip. Once a Phillies fan, always a Phillies fan.
