Fernandez Ks 9 as Fish Blank Phils

Jose Fernandez dominated the Phils and combined with two other relievers on a one-hit shutout of the Phils.

Ks PILE UP

On the eve of Cinco De Mayo, the Phillies 3-4-5 hitters (Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Delmon Young) combined for seven Ks, including a Golden Sombrero from the Big Piece. Only two Phils starters (Carlos Ruiz, Ben Revere) did not strike out in last night’s affair, as the Phillies combined for 12 Ks, nine thrown by Fernandez. On the flipside, Cole Hamels threw six Ks through eight and the two clubs finished with a combined 19 Ks.

HAMELS SOLID

Hamels made only two mistakes last night but they ended up being the difference: allowing just four hits all night and no walks, two of Hamels’ hits were solo shots, one to outfielder Marcell Ozuna and the other to second baseman Chris Valaika. Hamels threw 106 pitches with 73 of them landing for strikes. He certainly pitched well enough to win the game but the Phils could only muster one hit – a first inning Freddy Galvis single – and only three total base runners the entire night. Walks by Jimmy Rollins and Galvis were the other two base runners.

The Phillies and Marlins will finish their four game set with an odd 2:35 PM start. Doc will face Kevin Slowey, whose last outing was a dominating 8 IP, 1 ER performance against the Mets.
