Per Matt Provence, utfielders Leandro Castro and Tyson Gillies are on their way back to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Castro, 24, had been on the disabled list with a dislocation of “his left fifth finger“. In 62 games, Castro is hitting .262/.300/.415 with 7 HR and 13 SB. Gillies, 24, returns to the Lehigh Valley after hitting 7 HR in 50 games with Reading. Since May 31, Gillies hit .295/.343/.558 with 5 HR, 3 3B, and 2 SB for Reading with much of the success attributable to an adjustment made in his swing. Gillies is on the 40-man roster while Castro survived this past winter’s Rule 5 draft after being left unprotected.
With Castro and Gillies returning, OF Derrick Mitchell is headed back to Reading and OF Jermaine Mitchell has been released. D. Mitchell, 26, hit just .168/.238/.389 for Lehigh Valley in five games while J. Mitchell, 28, known for his speed and defense, could not make the most out of his third trip through Triple-A, hitting .256/.347/.440 with 13 SB in 17 attempts.
