After falling behind three runs, Phillies nearly came back to tie it in the sixth and again in the ninth, but fell short with a 6-5 defeat. John Lannan struggled over the five innings he pitched, scattering 11 hits and allowing four runs. Three of the runs came off a Pedro Alvarez home run in the fifth. Domonic Brown had three hits, including a two run home run that nearly cleared the outfield seats in right field. Delmon Young also had three hits. They were the only Phillies with multiple hits.
Phillippe Aumont struggled in just 1/3 of an innings work, allowing a triple, a HBP and a double before being relieved by Jake Diekman. A wild pitch that allowed a run to score by Diekman would prove to be the deciding factor. Jason Grilli clinched his league-leading 28th save, but not before Domonic Brown launched a two-run home run off him.
The Phils and Pirates square off in a day game tomorrow, and they will wear the new Stars and Stripes caps by New Era. It’ll be a Cole-Hamels matchup and Gerrit Cole will pitch for the Pirates and Cole Hamels will pitch for the Phillies.
