A quick update on some of the latest Phillies news and trade rumors:
The Phillies announced that catcher Humberto Quintero has cleared waivers and has elected free agency. Quintero appeared in just 24 games with the Phillies, beginning the year with the club while Carlos Ruiz was suspended and returning from a trip to Triple-A during Ruiz’s absence due to injury. Quintero hit .250/.294/.406 with 2 HR for the Phillies in 68 PA.
Jayson Stark reported today that the Phillies are among the many teams interested in Padres reliever Luke Gregerson. Gregerson is 29 years old and has one more year of arbitration left. The Padres are seeking young, controllable pitching according to MLB.com’s Corey Brock, but according to Stark, the Phillies are not interested in trading their upper-level Minor Leaguers in exchange for Gregerson.
Finally, was he or wasn’t he traded? That was the question last night on Twitter in reference to Orioles’ outfielder Chris Dickerson. Rumors were afloat that Dickerson was traded to the Phillies last night but today, an official end was put on that speculation. Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reported that the Orioles have placed Dickerson on outright waivers after failing to find a trade partner. Dickerson, 31, has played parts of the last six seasons with the Reds, Brewers, Yankees, and Orioles, hitting .263/.340/.408, playing 115 games in LF, 76 games in RF, and 61 games in CF.
