Phillies score six in the first to fuel win
After scoring 6 runs in the first inning, the Phillies held on tonight to beat the Padres 10-5. The Phils won their second straight series and are 5-1 in their last six games.
Tonight’s match started after a rain delay and Will Venable led off the game with a home run off Roy Halladay. Undoubtedly fans worried that we, especially Doc, were going to be in for a long night. It turned into a long first inning for sure, but it was all good news after that. With 6 runs on 5 hits, the Phillies jumped all over Padres starter Tyson Ross.
Halladay settled down and pitched well throughout the second, third and fourth innings. But then he got into serious trouble in the fifth and allowed 4 Padres runs. Their rally was fueled by 4 straight walks to start the inning then a throwing error Roy himself. He didn’t make it out of the fifth which means Justin DeFratus left with the win. DeFratus, along with Cesar Jimenez, Ethan Martin, B.J. Rosenberg and Jake Diekman held San Diego hitless over the final four innings. Despite the win, concern for Halladay remains.
The Phillies offensive output was led by Carlos Ruiz who finished the game 3-3 with a double and 3 RBI out of the cleanup spot. Chase Utley also drove in two runs and Jimmy Rollins was constantly on base with 2 hits and 2 walks.
The Phils head to Washington for a weekend series against the Nationals. Kendrick, Hamels and Cloyd will start against Strasberg, Gonzalez and Zimmerman.
