Still, the Phillies kept giving Durbin chances in big spots early on, and he failed over and over.
Eventually, after just sixteen appearances (and a total of sixteen innings pitched), Durbin was released. Due to him being released outright, the Phillies still owed him $1.1 million. He wouldn’t pitch again in 2013. His season ERA was an even 9.00, and his WHIP was comfortably over two.
He wasn’t used as a mop-up guy like we expected. Instead, he pitched a lot of six, seven, and even eighth innings in games that were still close. Many times, he put the game out of reach for the Phillies by giving up runs.
GRADE: F
Like his season, this review is short. There’s not much to say. Realistically, Durbin should have never been signed in the first place. I think many people expected him to be exactly what he was–a pitcher struggling to get outs while giving up a bunch of runs. He was put in a bad spot and the results were unsurprisingly bad.
