Here are the four Phillies starters we are likely to see in the upcoming Philly Dream Series.
#1 COLE HAMELS. At the top of the 2008 Phillies rotation is the 25-year old left-hander Cole Hamels. With a strong fastball and devastating changeup, he will counter the A’s ace Lefty Grove. He finished 2008 14-10 with a 2.09 ERA in addition to sporting a .224 batting average making him easily the best hitting pitcher on the team. His youth will come in handy after throwing 227.1 innings over the course of the season.
#2 BRETT MYERS. After recording 17 saves in 2007 as a closer, Brett Myers returned to his role as a starter in 2008. He finished an unimpressive 10-13 with a 4.55 ERA as the Phillies #2 arm. To say he’s highly emotional would be an understatement. Almost half of his pitches are fastballs, which he complements with a curveball, slider, and changeup.
#3 JAMIE MOYER. The only member of the 2008 Phillies to have already faced Jimmie Foxx in a game. Ok, so that’s a joke, but at age 45 he is the oldest pitcher in baseball (and he has only 4 degrees of separation from Jimmie Foxx
. It goes Foxx to Granny Hamner to Minnie Minoso to Harold Baines to Moyer.) He’s a crafty veteran who uses his junk ball reportoire to feast on young, impatient hitters.
#4 JOE BLANTON. At first considered a questionable trade deadline acquisition from the A’s, Joe was able to go 4-0 with a 4.20 since joining the Phils. Kentucky Joe will always be remembered for his home run in Game 4 of the 2008 World Series. He has a low 90s fastball, a 12-6 curve, a slider, and a changeup.
