Phillies Sign Bench Bat Brignac

The Phillies signed some bench competition, inking veteran utilityman Reid Brignac to a minor-league deal that includes an invite to Clearwater this spring.

Brignac, 27, had his best season as a major leaguer in 2010 with Tampa Bay, hitting .256 with 8 home runs and 45 knocked in. Since then, it’s been rather disastrous for Brignac as he’s been unable to stick with either the Rays, Rockies, or Yankees. On the weight of that one good season, registering a 2.5 WAR, Brignac is barely a league-average player.

But this is actually a fine move. You hope to hit on a guy in the same way you did with someone like Kevin Frandsen, etc. Maybe he surprises you in Spring Training and wins a job. And it’s not the same old name.
