Baseball Prospectus released their annual ranking of the thirty Major League teams and how they stack up with talent of age 25 and under, including both talent that is already on their roster and talent found in their minor league systems.
The Phillies did not rank favorably in the opinion of Baseball Prospectus. Their Jeff Moore writes:
“The Phillies have three potential big-league regulars on the U25 list, but none of the three (Ben Revere, Cody Asche, and Jonathan Pettibone) is an impact talent. The two prospects at the top of this list could be better than any of the three current major leaguers, but Jesse Biddle will be more of a secondary piece than a franchise cornerstone, as will Maikel Franco if he is forced to move to first base. There is some talent on the rest of the list, but it is all quite far away from coming to fruition.”
Moore is certainly more bearish than others on Biddle and Franco but what perhaps is more frightening is the other realization that comes with their list: division rival Nationals rank second, the Braves third, and Marlins fifth. Even the Mets ranked twelfth. This might be a long next couple of years.
