Chooch’s Hot Streak Propels Him to Top of NL Catchers

Chooch is among the MLB’s hottest players as the Phillies return home.

Update, 4 pm: Ruiz was named the NL’s Player of the Week.

Yesterday afternoon, Carlos Ruiz received a well-deserved day off. After starting the season hitting .204/.328/.286 through the Phillies’ 17th game, Ruiz had a week for the ages that began on April 21 in Los Angeles. Ruiz hit .500/.593/.909, hitting his 1st homer, earning 7 RBI, including his first of the season, and scoring 8 runs.

Because of Ruiz’s hot streak, Chooch’s triple-slash now sits at .296/.412/.479. As my colleague Corey Seidman points out, Ruiz ranks 1st in OBP, extra base hits, and runs, among NL catchers while ranking 3rd in batting average and walks. Chooch also ranks second among NL catchers in OPS and is tied for 1st in wRC+.

With the Phillies playing well, Tuesday can’t come soon enough. While resting your catcher on what would have been his seventh day behind the plate in a row makes an awful lot of sense, I kind of wanted to see Ruiz out there to see if he could keep his hot streak going. Now, we’ll all just have to wait until Tuesday.
