Mike Adams was placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his rotator cuff. The loss is a huge blow for the Phillies, as he was one of the top arms in the bullpen. Health has been an issue for Adams since he joined the Phillies in 2013. Adams has pitched extremely well in 2014, posting a 2.12 ERA in 17 innings. Unfortunately, this is his second stint on the DL this season.
Adams feels that his time on the disabled list will help his injury. He suffered a similar injury back in 2009. He took some time to strengthen his arm, and felt much better afterwards. He hopes to do the same thing with this injury.
To replace Adams, the Phillies called up the young relief pitcher, Ken Giles . Known as “100-miles Giles,” the right-hander can touch 100 mph on the gun. In 13 appearances with Double-A Reading, Giles had a 1.20 ERA. In 15 innings, he struck out 29 and walked just five. He was promoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley in May, where he saved five games. His strikeout totals were down in Triple-A, striking out 9 in 13.2 innings.
