Following the death of his father, Tony Gwynn Jr. has returned to the Phillies roster after being placed on the bereavement list on June 16. Tony Sr. died following a lengthy bout with cancer last week at age 52.
Gwynn Jr., 31, is hitting just .155 this year in 101 plate appearances.
He’ll take the roster spot of catcher Wil Nieves, who blew a tire running the bases on June 18 and hasn’t played since. Nieves hits the DL with a right quad strain. Before his injury, Nieves had been producing as Carlos Ruiz’s backup, hitting .259 over just 54 PA’s.
It’s good to see Tony Jr. make his way back after what was surely a tough week following the passing of his legendary father.
