After dropping each of their last six games, the Phillies snapped the season long streak with a win against the Reds, 8-0. The offense got to Reds starter Johnny Cueto in the 4th, and collected ten hits overall. Cole Hamels was masterful in seven and two-thirds innings, and Domonic Brown, John Mayberry Jr, Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Marlon Byrd, and Ryan Howard collected RBIs.
Great Start For Hamels
Cole Hamels threw 7.2 shutout innings (the deepest he’s gone in a game in 2014), allowing just five hits. He walked two and struck out three. His 125 pitches are tied for his second highest total on the year. His ERA is now down to 3.49, and he’s thrown at least six innings in all but one start this year. He’s had the Reds’ number over the years, and with tonight’s start, now holds a 1.36 ERA against the Reds, and a 1.09 ERA in Cincinnati.
J-Roll Inching Closer To Record
Jimmy Rollins notched another hit–a home run in the 5th–putting him six hits away from tying the all-time team record, seven from breaking it. It could happen in this current series in Cincinnati, but the team returns home to face the Padres next, which is more likely.
Losing Streak Snapped!
The Phils were playing some horrid baseball lately. They lost their last six games, and the way they were losing was just hard to watch. Tonight, however, they played with life, and looked like a team that was determined to snap the losing streak. Here’s to hoping that this continues and isn’t just a one-time thing.
The Phillies and Reds are back at it tomorrow with a 4:10 start time. Roberto Hernandez will go for the Phils, and Alfredo Simon will go for the Reds.
