Late-inning comebacks used to be a common occurrence in Philadelphia. The contending teams of the past would often pull off amazing come-from behind victories that got fans pumped. With the 2014 Phillies far from contention, there hasn’t been much to cheer about; however, a few games this week have given fans a small taste of what that late-inning energy used to be like. The Phillies pulled off another late-inning comeback in Sunday’s 7-6 win over the New York Mets. The Phillies trailed 6-1 at one point, but were able to come up with some magic.
In the 7th inning, Chase Utley tripled to bring home a run and make the game 6-5. Utley had a tremendous game, finishing a double shy of a cycle. He homered in the first inning.
In the 9th inning, the Mets brought in Jenrry Mejia to close. Marlon Byrd came in to pinch hit with a runner on. He came through in the clutch, driving home Cody Asche. After Byrd stole second and the Mets intentionally walked Utley, Ryan Howard was due up. Howard has had a rough season, including a period where he was benched. Howard has been better as of late, and he came up big here. He singled down the line, bringing home Byrd. The walk-off gave the Phillies a 7-6 win.
Kendrick Struggles
