Sandberg Praises Youth, Ready to Rebuild

Seems pretty obvious that Ryne Sandberg is on board with what the Phillies are selling the fan base this offseason: that a rebuild of some sort is forthcoming. It’s been slow to develop, but that could change soon as the Winter Meetings saw their first major move in Jon Lester signing with the Cubs. That could be the first domino to fall.

Sandberg told Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News that he likes the idea of getting fresh blood in here.

“But there is a process there, and there is a way to build it to where we all want it to be, and you have to start somewhere. Like the bullpen last year was young players that had to prove something. They had energy and youth on their side and they were successful. To have that a little bit more on the field on a regular basis, and to get that process started building a new core group, I think that’s necessary.”

That to me says “I’m tired of the old and tired. Give me new blood I can work with that can and will give 100 percent and beyond.” And who can blame him. The veteran-laden teams of the past few seasons have done nothing but lose.

Will Sandberg get his way? We’ll know soon as the wheels should now be set in motion.
