Phillies avoid arbitration with Galvis and Gomez

According to MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki and William Boor, the Phillies made a couple of moves Thursday; signing shortstop Freddy Glavis to a one-year, $2 million deal and signing reliever Jeanmar Gomez to a one-year, $1.4 million deal. The deals have not been confirmed by the team.

Galvis played his first season as an everyday shortstop in 2015 after Jimmy Rollins was traded prior to the regular season. In 559 at-bats, the 26-year-old posted a slash line of .263/.302/.343 to go along with seven home runs and 50 RBIs. He is slated to be the opening day shortstop, but with J.P. Crawford expected to make his major league debut sometime in 2016, Galvis could very well find himself back in the utility role by season’s end.

In his first year with the Phillies, Gomez enjoyed his best season out of the bullpen over his six-year major league career. the 27-year-old appeared in 65 games for the Phils and posted a career-low 3.01 ERA over 74.2 innings of work and 50 strikeouts.

Galvis and Gomez were two of three players who filed for arbitration on Tuesday. With these deals, newly acquired pitcher Jeremy Hellickson is the Phillies’ last arbitration-eligible player for the 2016 season.
