The Phillies have just suffered a substantial blow for the 2016 season.
You heard it: Aaron Altherr’s wrist injury is worse than originally thought. He’ll have surgery Wednesday.
Altherr, 25, has had wrist injury problems in the past. In 161 plate appearances last season he hit .241/.338/.489 with five home runs and 20 extra-base hits, plus solid defensive play. He was slated to start in the outfield on opening day after the impressive showing last season. In 10 spring plate appearances he hit a home run and scored two runs; he was injured in Friday’s game against Atlanta.
With this injury, it’s likely Goeddel will get more reps in the outfield this season. Cody Asche will probably get more reps, as well. David Lough and Cedric Hunter are getting time in the outfield, too, this spring, and prospect Nick Williams is likely to being the season in Lehigh Valley.
