In a matchup against ex-Phillie Kyle Kendrick, the Phils came out swinging to tune 16 hits against the Braves today. Bursts of runs and contributions from the entire lineup sealed the deal as the Phillies went on to win 9-2. Cesar Hernandez led the way with three hits and a pair of RBIs.
Ryan Howard put the Phils on the board early with a double to score two runs. Darin Ruf followed him with a double of his own to give David Buchanan a 3-0 lead before he could throw a pitch. Peter Bourjos and Cesar Hernandez continued to record hits at the top of the lineup. The pair recorded back-to-back hits twice today and scored two runs apiece.
Buchanan struggled in his first inning, allowing the first three men to reach base on two hits and a walk. He allowed two runs and recorded a wild pitch before getting out of the inning. His second inning was much smoother, with no runs allowed on a hit and a walk. He finished his two-inning outing by striking out Freddie Freeman.
The rest of the pitching staff stymied the Braves for the remainder of the afternoon, only allowing four hits over the remaining seven innings. Bobby LaFromboise, coming in after Buchanan, worked two innings and recorded three strikeouts.
The Phillies return to Clearwater tomorrow afternoon against the Blue Jays (9-1).
