2016 Spring Training

Phils Blank Bucs, Win 1-0

st 2016Phillies pitchers scattered eight hits across nine innings and held the Pittsburgh Pirates scoreless in today’s 1-0 Grapefruit League victory. A seventh-inning single from the returning Andres Blanco off of Pittsburgh’s A.J. Schugel scored Brock Stassi for the game’s winning run.

Two pieces of the Ken Giles‘ return pitched well for the Phillies today. Vincent Velasquez showed much improved control as today’s starter, striking out three in three innings while giving up just three hits and one walk. Meanwhile, Brett Oberholtzer pitched three scoreless innings, as well, striking out one while scattering four hits. Both men are considered viable competitors for the role of fifth starter.

Gregory Infante bounced back from a pair of rough outings to strike three in the seventh for the Phillies while Colton Murray pitched a scoreless eighth. Hector Neris pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the Spring.

In terms of offense, there wasn’t much for the Fightin’ Phils. Blanco, who started today’s game at third base, was the only Phil with two hits and joined Stassi as the only players with doubles. Cesar Hernandez, Tyler Goeddel, and Ryan Jackson had the remaining three Phillies’ hits, all singles.

The Phillies improve to 4-3-1 with the win and return to Clearwater tomorrow in a rematch with the Buccos where Adam Morgan is scheduled to face Jon Niese.
