Following a disappointing loss in their home opener, the Phillies (3-5) bounced back with a 3-0 win Tuesday night over the Padres (3-5) in game two of their four-game series.
Both teams struggled to get anything going offensively, as both starters shut down the opposition. Phillies right-hander Charlie Morton bounced back nicely from his first start in a Phillies uniform by allowing just three hits, walking four and striking out seven over 6 2/3 innings-pitched.
Padres starter, left-hander Robbie Erlin, matched Morton pitch for pitch as he, too, allowed just three hits, struck out seven and allowed just one earned run over six innings-pitched.
The Phillies’ bats finally broke through against Erlin in the sixth after Tyler Goeddel recorded his first big league hit, a single that found its way past the shortstop and into left field.
Goeddel would advance to second on a wild pitch and would come in to score on a two-out triple by Odubel Herrera.
Morton would be taken out of the game after walking two-straight batters with two outs in the seventh in favor of Hector Neris, who continued his clutch pitching by striking out Will Myers to end the inning.
In the eighth, the Phillies were able to load the bases for Maikel Franco
after Cedric Hunter, Emmanuel Burriss and Herrera each walked. Franco hit what looked like an inning-ending double play, but the throw to first was wide, allowing two runs to score.Jeanmar Gomez would work around a base hit in the ninth to finish off the Padres and record his third save of the season.
Post-game stats: Via Philly Voice’s Ryan Lawrence, after allowing 15 earned runs in their first four games (10 1/3 innings-pitched), the Phillies’ bullpen has allowed zero earned runs in their last four games (10 2/3 innings-pitched).
Whats next: Jerad Eickhoff makes his second start of 2016 and will oppose Padres starter Colin Rea Wednesday night in game three of this four-game series. First pitch is at 7:05 PM ET.
