Series preview: Phillies at Marlins, July 25-27



Phillies helmetWhen the teams faced off last week in Philadelphia, the Marlins (53-45) notched victories in three out of four contests against the Phillies (45-55). They go at it again in a three-game set in Miami starting on Monday night.

Monday, 7:10 PM. Jeremy Hellickson (7-7, 3.84 ERA) vs. Jarred Cosart (0-1, 7.98 ERA).  Hellickson, 29, has a 3-3 record with a 4.10 ERA in eight road starts this year.  Against Miami, Hellickson has a career 3.43 ERA in seven starts.  In his last five starts, Hellickson sports a 2.25 ERA.  The 26-year-old Cosart, who was a 38th round draft pick of the Phillies in 2008, will be making his return to the big leagues following a stint in Triple-A, where he posted a 3-5 record with a 4.14 ERA and a .281 batting average against.  Cosart has a 2.40 ERA in three career starts against the Phils.

Tuesday, 7:10 PM. Jerad Eickhoff (6-11, 3.98 ERA) vs. Tom Koehler (7-8, 4.42 ERA).  The 26-year-old Eickhoff is 0-2 with an 8.27 ERA in his last three starts.  In three career starts against the Marlins, Eickhoff sports a 4.24 ERA.  He also has tallied a 5.51 ERA in nine road starts this season.  Koehler, 30, has a 3-4 record with a 3.69 ERA in 14 career contests against the Phils.  Koehler has a 4.22 ERA in eight home starts this season.  Maikel Franco is 2-for-14 (.143 avg) in his career against Koehler.

Wednesday, 12:10 PM. Zach Eflin (3-3, 3.40 ERA) vs. Adam Conley (6-5, 3.58 ERA).  The righty Eflin has posted a 2.08 ERA in seven starts since a disastrous MLB debut on June 14th when he allowed eight earned runs in 2 2/3 innings against the Blue Jays.  The 22-year-old Eflin has a 0.38 ERA in three night games in the big leagues this year while he sports a 6.15 ERA in five day games.  Conley, a 26-year-old left-hander, is 3-3 with a 3.25 ERA in nine home starts this season.  Against the Phillies, Conley has a 1.88 career ERA in four starts.  Conley has a 2.63 ERA over his last seven starts.

Phils reliever Hector Neris has a 1.42 ERA in 11 career appearances against the Marlins. The 27-year-old has an 11.01 K/9 mark in 50 games this year.

All-Star outfielder Odubel Herrera is a .333 career hitter against Miami. Since the All-Star break, Herrera sports a .256 average with a homer and two RBI in 10 games.

Phils infielder Andres Blanco is expected to hit the disabled list after suffering a fracture to his left index finger in a game on Sunday in Pittsburgh.

Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechevarria is batting .194 in 45 home games this season. He has a career .298/.333/.398 slash line in 53 games against the Phillies.

Miami outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is 2-for-30 (.067 avg) in nine contests against the Phillies this season. The 26-year-old slugger is batting .304 in 18 games this month.

The Phillies’ team ERA since the All-Star break is 3.76 (16th in MLB).

The Marlins’ team ERA since the All-Star break is 3.07 (8th in MLB).
