Happy Halloween! The Cubs won 3-2 Sunday night, sending the World Series back to Cleveland Tuesday at three games to two. Meanwhile:
- Yeah, the Cowboys beat the Eagles 29-23 Sunday night. The Eagles had a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, but they couldn’t hold on. Phillies catcher and noted Cowboys fan Cameron Rupp showed his excitement after the Dallas win. It wasn’t received well.
We’re sensitive, aren’t we? Look, Rupp is from Dallas. He’s a born-and-bred Cowboy fan. He’s not going to drop his favorite football team just because his career took him to that team’s rival city. Is it fun to playfully jab him? Sure, if he publicly puts his fandom out there. But personal attacks? Saying he’s had a bad career? Not cool.
And, by the way, anyone who earns a starting catcher job in major league baseball is, in fact, having a good career.
- The winter leagues are up and running, and a few Phillies are taking part. First the notable hitters. Rhys Hoskins (Dominican league) is hitting .235/.395/.265 with six walks in about 40 plate appearances. Dylan Cozens (Dominican) has a home run and is hitting .200/.294/.367. Tommy Joseph (Dominican) is .150/.227/.200 in 20 at bats. Andrew Knapp (Dominican) is .235/.316/.294 in 17 at bats. Carlos Tocci (Venezuelan league) is at .316/.373/.395 with four doubles and a triple in 20 games, while Brock Stassi (Venezuelan) is hitting .286/.471/.540 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 19 games, and Gabriel Lino is at .188/.206/.281 in 32 at bats. Jesmuel Valentin (Clemente league) has a .333/.308/.333 line with four RBI after three games. Among notable pitchers, Alec Asher (Dominican) is 0-0 with a 1.10 ERA, 6 K and 1 BB in a league-high 16.1 innings.
Our Jay Floyd updates daily action on Twitter; follow him for more. As far as what to get out of these numbers – don’t read too much into them, though Tocci’s numbers are most encouraging.
