In not-so-shocking news, the Phillies have extended a qualifying offer to Jeremy Hellickson.
If accepted, Hellickson would pitch for the Phillies in 2017 under a one-year, $17.2 million contract. If rejected, Hellickson goes onto the free agent market; if a team signs Hellickson, that team would surrender its first non-protected draft pick, and the Phils would be granted a compensatory draft pick between rounds one and two.
Hellickson has one week to decide the next step. He went 12-10 with a 3.71 ERA last year for the Phils, a bounceback season that proved him one of the stronger mid-to-late-rotation starters in baseball.
Sources believe Hellickson would receive a generous free-agent contract on the market. Phillies Nation has previously said the Phils should extend the qualifying offer to Hellickson.
Tim MalcolmTim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
