Phillies linked to Brian Dozier in rumors

Good morning! Tis’ the season for news and wild rumors!

The 29-year-old Twins second baseman is a bonafide slugger, hitting 42 home runs last year and 93 over the last three seasons. He also has hit more than 30 doubles the last four seasons, and has a decent eye at the plate. As a fielder he’s average and can play shortstop, as well.

He’s being paid $6 million in 2017 and $9 million in 2018, so he’s a reasonable contract play. But he’d likely be worth at least one prospect plus the guy who he’d replace: Cesar Hernandez.

In the end, Dozier is the kind of player the Phils should target in a trade, but he may cost too much. The Phils could maybe take on Phil Hughes’ bloated contract to lessen the blow, but having Hughes until 2019 seems quite counterproductive.

Anyway, you’ll hear more rumors like this over the next few weeks. The Phils will “be in on” a ton of guys.

Good to know. These deals are typically one-year things, FYI. And it’s good to have Franzke, LA and JJ back for 2017. The radio broadcast is one of the best in baseball.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
