Phillies move on from the David Buchanan experience

Good morning! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone; hopefully everyone had a great day yesterday.

Some quick news:

  • As reported Wednesday, the Phillies traded Jimmy Cordero to the Washington Nationals. Cordero just wasn’t able to stick on the 40-man roster (too many questions for a still pretty low-value position to the Phillies), so a waiver claim and deal was made.
  • Meanwhile, the Phils released David Buchanan, the longtime fringe starter in the organization.

Buchanan went 6-8 with a 3.75 ERA in 2014, sparking some debate about his potential as back-end starter. That faded fast with a 2-9, 6.99 ERA effort in 2015. He pitched well in Lehigh Valley in 2016, however, going 10-9 with a 3.98 ERA. That said, he was organizational filler and not needed with such an influx of young arms in the system.

O’Sullivan went 1-7 with a 6.13 ERA as a member of the Phillies over two seasons. More recently he went 2-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 2016 with Boston.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
