BREAKING: Phillies extend Odubel Herrera through 2021

UPDATE (4:34 p.m.): Jim Salisbury reports the five-year deal is for a guaranteed $30.5 million. He could earn an additional $11.5 million in 2022 and $12.5 million in 2023, which are club option years.

The Phillies have signed outfielder Odubel Herrera to a five-year extension.

Herrera, who will turn 25 this year, is now signed on through 2021, with options for 2022 and 2023. Herrera had yet to hit his arbitration years; with this contract, the Phillies will skip the arbitration process altogether and have the opportunity to keep Herrera two years past his original free agent deadline.

Since the Phillies selected Herrera from Texas in the 2015 Rule 5 Draft, “El Torito” has hit .291/.353/.419 with 23 home runs and 90 runs batted in. In 2015 he was worth 3.8 rWAR, increasing that in 2016 with a 4.2 rWAR. Originally an infielder, Herrera was asked to play center field upon his arrival in Philadelphia and has acclimated to the position, earning a Gold Glove nomination in 2016.

He also was the Phils’ lone all star in 2016.
