WHITEY’S RETURN: Andres Blanco is back with the Phils on a one-year, $3 million contract. Blanco was superb for the Phils in 2015, but had a relatively average season at the plate (.253/.316/.405) last year. He fills a bench spot on opening day, but the Phillies still have to address the rest of the pine before the season begins.
RICH GET RICHIE: The Phils also claimed third baseman Richie Shaffer off waivers Wednesday. Regarded as one of the Rays’ better prospects, Shaffer was traded in November to Seattle, who then designated him for assignment. Enter the Phils.
Shaffer is a powerful bat who hasn’t translated his skill to the majors. He’s 25, so there’s still time; likely, he’ll get a shot to make the bench out of spring training.
ROSTER MOVES: Phil Klein is going to Asia; the Phillies granted the pitcher’s request for release. Meanwhile to make room for Blanco, the Phils designated pitcher David Rollins for assignment.
DOC CHECKUP: Philadelphia Magazine called up Roy Halladay, who spoke about his time in Philly and how nervous he was that his teammates wouldn’t like him. Also, that 2011 National League Division Series ended poorly, huh?
