Checking in on Hamels, Utley, Frenchy

Good morning! Another light day, so let’s check in on some former Phillies:

FEAR THE BEARD: Cole and Heidi Hamels recently spoke to students in the Dallas area, and the Hamels Foundation tweeted about it with a photo. Here’s the tweet. Yeah.

Look, Cole, you’re a good looking dude. Always have been. The beard? Not so sure. He’s done a beard before (see photo in this post), but once it gets unkempt and unruly, it’s time to go.

It’s not the first time Hamels went with an odd facial hair choice. And like that choice, Hamels will probably get rid of it before the season begins. But still. Yeah.

CHASING A DECISION: Chase Utley is reportedly close to deciding where he’ll play in 2017. The second baseman has multiple offers on the table, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

Utley spent much of last season as the Dodgers’ starting second baseman and leadoff hitter, going .252/.319/.396.

FRENCHY SIGHTING: Also in that above MLB Trade Rumors piece: The Braves are interested in bringing back former Brave and former Phillie Jeff Franceour, but on a minor-league deal.

BIG WEEK NEXT WEEK: A more formal announcement will come, but on Monday, Feb. 6, we’re starting our ranking of the 50 Greatest Phillies Games of the Last 50 Years. It’ll go every day through the beginning of the season.

We’ll also ask a few “What if?” questions, and Daniel Walsh will present a series on his adventures using a game to break the 2016 Phils.

Stay tuned!

Tim Malcolm

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
