Phillies ink Galvis to one-year, $4.35M deal

The Phillies on Thursday agreed to a one-year, $4.35 million contract with shortstop Freddy Galvis.

Galvis, 27, was in his second year of arbitration; by agreeing to the contract, Galvis and the Phils avoided heading to an arbiter to determine his pay for 2017.

The shortstop hit .241/.274/.399 last season over 158 games, hitting 20 home runs, a career high. He also played stellar defense at shortstop, earning a Gold Glove nomination.

MLB Trade Rumors projected Galvis’ value at about $4.4 million for 2017, so this is a slight underpay to that projection. At the very least, it keeps shortstop warm until top prospect J.P. Crawford

likely arrives in Philadelphia. At that point, Galvis could become a utility bat, play part-time shortstop with Crawford, slide to second base in the event of a Cesar Hernandez trade, or be moved himself.
