Nothing new about Phillies’ spring training uniform

Good morning! Some quick bites on a Friday:

COGHLAN UP: The Phillies signed Chris Coghlan to a minor-league contract with a Clearwater invitation. Again, he has a leg up on competition for a bench spot because he can play just about every position.

It surprises me the Phils didn’t pick up Steve Pearce, who’s basically a better version of Coghlan. But also, there’s no use in debating this guy or that guy when it’s the 12th or 13th offensive player on the roster.

SPRING DUDS: People are getting on the Phillies a little for the team’s spring training uniform, which is decidedly typical (looks like the same red jersey as the home alternate, slightly different from the picture you see with this post).

I agree with the field. If you want to sell merch, spring training is a fine way to introduce something different. A Phillie Phanatic cap … a Liberty Bell design … go for broke, guys.

50 OF 50: As announced yesterday, we’re launching 50 of 50: The 50 Greatest Games of 50 Years on Monday. Every day for 50 days we’ll unveil one of the greatest Phillies games of the last 50 years, counting them down from 50 to 1. We’re very excited. Hope you’ll check it out!

Tim Malcolm

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
