Cesar Hernandez kicks off 2017 season with homer

Cesar Hernandez led the Phillies 2017 season with a home run, something that hasn’t been done since Heinie Mueller hit a leadoff homer against Brooklyn in 1938. It was just the second time in Phillies history a player opened the season with a home run.

Homer aside, Hernandez worked a 3-2 count after going down 0-2. Howie Kendrick followed suit and knocked in a single on a full count after also working back from 0-2. Rookie hitting coach Matt Stairs stressed patience and approach this spring and if the first inning is an indicator, they listened.
