Braves release Ryan Howard

The Atlanta Braves have released former Phillie Ryan Howard.

Howard was signed and designated to triple-A Gwinnett, where he hit .184/.238/.263 with one home run in 11 games. The former Phils slugger, 37, has been hoping to catch on with a team and get another shot in the majors.

OPINION: It was an uphill climb for Howard, who didn’t draw any interest during the offseason and pretty swiftly looks like a relic of a faraway past. That said, this outcome is a little unfair for the guy. He had a quick spring training after being signed April 6, and 11 games isn’t a very long audition for anyone. But the Braves didn’t think he was worthy to be the designated hitter of a .379 team. Them’s the breaks.
