The Phillies selected Adam Haseley in the first round, eighth overall, in the 2017 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.
Haseley, 21, is a junior at the University of Virginia. An outfielder, the Windermere, Florida, native hit .390/.491/.659 with 14 home runs, 16 doubles and a triple over 58 games for the Cavaliers. He also stole 10 bases, struck out 21 times and walked 44 times.
He also pitched for Virginia, going 7-1 with a 3.58 ERA over 65.1 innings in 2017. He struck out 53 and walked 18. It’s likely the Phils will develop him as an outfielder.
Scouting reports peg Haseley as a potential five-tool major league outfielder with better-than-average speed and arm, plus increased power and a solid approach at the plate.
