Time to check in on the farm system as we inch closer to the deadline.
LEHIGH VALLEY
Highlights:
A really good week for the now-second-place (thanks, Yankees) IronPigs, who have won six of their last seven. Crawford has been leading the charge, boosting his average while showing off some power (he now has eight home runs on the season). Cozens now has 23 homers.
READING
Highlights:
A couple wins, a couple losses for the Fightin’ Phils, who are 11.5 in back of first-place Trenton (ugh, Yankees) and continue to transition with players coming in and going out. Herlis Rodriguez is one of them, moved to Lehigh Valley after just 25 at bats in Reading. Jose Taveras was called up to Reading from Clearwater, and in his first start allowed three runs over five and a third.
CLEARWATER
Highlights:
Once again the Threshers go 3-3 on the week and are 2.5 games behind … yup, the Tampa Yankees. Not too much action from prospects. Singer is a Philly kid who’s putting up some decent numbers out of the Threshers’ pen. Suarez and Romero picked up in Clearwater right where they left off in Lakewood.
LAKEWOOD
Highlights:
The Claws go 3-4 on the week without a Sixto start; they’re now 13-16 while the league looks up at the 19-9 Charleston RiverDogs … of course, the Yankees’ affiliate. Fanti should probably move to Clearwater and join JoJo and Ranger. Alastre is putting on a nice start in Lakewood, while Garcia is a tad old for the level.
WILLIAMSPORT
Highlights:
The Crosscutters had another wet week, this time at home against State College. Otherwise four-straight wins for the 18-12 Williamsport crew. Oh, guess who has the best record in the New York-Penn League? Yup, the Yankees’ affiliate. Anyway, Haseley slid way back to earth, but check out Ortiz, hitting and getting on base at a good clip. Pitching has been relatively solid, but it’s early. Lots of sorting out to do.
ROOKIE LEAGUES
Highlights:
Nobody has been outstandingly consistent yet, but Rosso may be the exception, maintaining a stellar ERA while giving up just 33 hits in his nearly 50 innings of work. Also, he is already 21.
