Aside from the defensive miscues – looking at you Cameron Perkins and Cameron Rupp – Jerad Eickhoff’s inability to go deep in games, and Edubray Ramo’s ninth inning meltdown, the Phillies first win in California this season was worth staying up for.
Rhys Hoskins hit his fourth homer, a three-run shot to left, since getting called up on August 10 to put the Phillies ahead for good in the third inning. Fellow youngin’ Jorge Alfaro
got the start at first base to give struggling Tommy Joseph a much-needed break. He made a great catch to double-up Jarret Parker to help get Eickhoff out of trouble in the bottom of the third.Ty Kelly stole the show with a grand slam in the sixth inning. It was just his 14th hit in 75 at-bats this season but he has made them count. Kelly has five go-ahead hits this season, the slam not included. Rupp added a solo home run in the ninth for good measure.
The win snapped a six-game losing streak. The Phils hope to grab the win on Sunday afternoon against Madison Bumgarner to split the series.
