Playing the Rube: A Baseball Experiment – Chapter 6 – The Darkest Timeline?

The Phillies won a world championship in 2008.

Then Ruben Amaro Jr. was named general manager.

The Phillies didn’t win another world championship.

Tim Malcolm and Dan Walsh wonder if they can do better. So, we continue “Playing the Rube,” a weekly series with accompanying podcast in which Tim and Dan attempt to steer the Phillies to more victories, starting in 2009, through the deep simulation game OOTP Baseball ’18.

CHAPTER 6: THE DARKEST TIMELINE?

Our 2009 Phillies aren’t very good right now. With a 3-10 record, we’re threatening to take a nosedive on the season. But, we did end the previous week with two wins, so all may not be lost.

We start this week checking in on the minor leagues, and ponder whether John Mayberry Jr. is worthy of a callup in the near future. We also look at two guys mashing in Lakewood: catcher Travis d’Arnaud and outfielder Derrick Mitchell.

Then we go into the week’s games, series against Milwaukee and Florida. We should win, right?

Right?

Ehhhh.

At least Ryan Howard was named National League Player of the Week. Take *that*, Brian Schneider.

By the end of this week we have more injuries to sort through, more issues to figure out (like when is it time to panic …) and more darkness to wade through.

It’s fun!
