The Phillies on Friday announced two new hires in the front office.
Sam Fuld, who retired from playing baseball Friday after a nine-year major league career with the Cubs, Rays, Athletics and Twins, was named the Phils’ new major league information coordinator. And Ben Werthan, who worked as advance scouting coordinator with the Orioles for the past six years, is the new minor league information coordinator.
Both Fuld and Werthan will essentially gather information (data, research) and make recommendations to the Phillies’ coaching staff, players and front office.
It’s yet another signal that the Phillies are moving quickly toward the front of baseball’s new age of information. Fuld, 35, is well liked across baseball and has an economics degree from Stanford University. Werthan, 31, broke in with the Reds and Rays before becoming a key piece of the Orioles’ scouting department, reporting to Buck Showalter while helping to prepare the O’s for future matchups.
